The itinerary meanders along some attractive white dirt tracks forming a ring in the northern area of Andossi, with departure and arrival in Madesimo. It encompasses some rarely-equalled panorama including the splendid vista over the high peaks of Valle Spluga: pizzi Stella, Groppera, Emet, Suretta, Tambò, Ferrè and Quadro. Leave from the centre of Madesimo (Via Carducci) heading north uphill along Via Emet. Around a hundred metres after you pass the snow-mobile hire point, shift left onto the pedestrian walkway which flanks the Scalcoggia torrent (nb a short section where you must pay particular attention to pedestrians). And so onwards across the“Roman Bridge” in order to take on the dirt track, an initially rather severe stretch, which climbs towards Andossi, an escarpment which serves as a perfect vantage point over the entire Valle Spluga. There are all manner of possible enjoyable detours on your way up above the valley, but they should certainly include the path that takes you to the Valcava Alpine Garden (free entry) and another to the enchanting little church of San Rocco. Once your efforts have brought you “on high” you pedal along a flat dirt track from which you can pick out the ski slopes of Madesimo on the left and the pastures of Andossi to the right. Crossing the plateau on concrete or asphalt surfaces you encounter mountain dwellings and fountains before descending towards the reservoir at Montespluga. Grazing cattle add to the ambience in what are picture-postcard pastoral settings. Having tackled a downhill section you now cut across the main Statale 36 Lake Como – Spluga, then follows a short section towards the south up to Stuetta, from where you swing left onto the dirt track that leads back to Andossi. There’s a short uphill stretch before heading back downhill to Madesimo following the same route you pedalled on the outward trip.
